Come on---Fight Back!

As February is waiting in the wings I am bracing myself. Traditionally speaking, it has always been my most challenging month…even more so than December!
Why?
I, like many others, tend to miss the sun this time of year. I get moody, irrational, cynical and just down-right crabby. Unfortunately, when those winter blues kick in, that pesky little negative “Inner Critic” voice in my head starts to pipe up…you know-- the deflater, the excuse maker, the TERMINATOR. It seems to be a pattern for me.

He says things like…

”Well it is an awful long time until spring, you can worry about your bum in April” (You see my inner critic doesn’t know that I actually care more about my health than the size of my bum…he hasn’t really clued in yet –shhhhhh don’t tell him)

and

“Girl, are you ever down…you know what would cheer you up? Junk food!”

Oh and my personal favorite

“Chocolate=Happy…wink”.

Sometimes, the voice can be really nasty and say  things like “You suck at this” and “Why do you bother, you are never going to succeed.” Nice ,eh?

Oh, don’t look at me like that; you know exactly what I am talking about.  Even though your script may be different, we all have an inner critic to contend with.

The thing is, when our defenses are low, and it does happen, it is very very easy to let our guard down. We tend to step back into our comfort zones and rely on our old “reliable” thought patterns to set the pace. Unfortunately, those thought patterns will typically serve only to sabotage our efforts. It is much easier to believe the bad stuff anyway, isn’t it? After all, this positive self talk is new to us…and it doesn’t come naturally. We have to really work at it; and when we are feeling blue, the effort seems that much greater.

But I am here to tell you now; this is precisely when you NEED to push through.

Recognizing and acknowledging our own patterns is vital to reaching our goals (Any goal!). In fact when you begin to distinguish that “inner critic” and recognize the destructive force behind those negative thoughts, you will be better able to challenge them head on, rather than let them eat away at you. So be prepared, come armed, and be ready to battle. When you start to hear that familiar script, that negative self talk…quietly shake your head in condescension and say, “Tsk Tsk, is that all you got?” You will be amazed by the results when you stand up and fight for yourself!

Yes, historically speaking, February has challenged me. I recognize that…and thank goodness I do. I am digging my heals in and refusing to budge. Even. One. Inch.

Live Well,

Jen

Wow, if this woman does not inspire us to eat a more natural diet, I don't know what will! I am not promoting being a vegetarian or a vegan if that is not your "cuppa" tea...but I am a huge advocate for eating as naturally as possible at least 80% of the time. Go Mimi!!!

I choose to eat meat for protien but I have reduced the amount of animal protien I used to eat and started to incorporate alternative protiens such as different types of beans, hemp, etc.; as well as increase the amount of "live" food that I eat (essentially raw fruits and vegetables). I can honestly say that since I made these changes, and stopped eating processed food I also feel younger and more vital. And, a nice bonus to that is a healthier, leaner body. Yay!

I recognize that it is very challenging to change our eating habits...but it doesn't have to be a sudden, drastic change. Start incorporating small changes in your eating. Perhaps you could start by eating just a few more veggies, or making one meal each day "processed free", or serve one Vegetarian or meat-free meal each week, and then go from there! We are blessed to have the internet at our fingertips by which to look up recipes for healthy meals; or to educate ourselves about ingredients and make an informed decision about whether or not we want to put it in our body.

So, just for fun...pick your favorite processed, high fat, high sodium, high sugar treat...doesn't matter what it is...Doritos, potato chips, cookies, Joe Louis...and sit down by your computer and look up every unknown ingredient and educate yourself about what those ingredients are. If it is something you wouldn't keep in your pantry, why would you want to eat it?

But hey, if you don't want to look up ingredients on the internet, no problem! Here is a good rule of thumb and it is easy to do...
If you can't pronounce it...it probably isn't food. Avoid. Repeat.

Then imagine how hot you are going to look at 70!

Live Well,

Jen

A: PC Blue Menu Chewy Cranberry Apple Granola Bars

Granola (Rolled Oats, Wheat Flakes, Sugar/Glucose-Fructose, Glucose, Honey, Canola And/Or Soybean Oil, Fancy Molasses, Salt, Vegetable Monoglycerides), Glucose, Rice Flour, Cranberries (Contain Sugar, Sunflower Oil), Dehydrated Apples (Contain Sulphites), Glycerin, Honey, Fructose, Sugar/Glucose-Fructose, Canola And/Or Soybean Oil, Salt, Vegetable Monoglycerides, Citric Acid, Natural Flavour. Sure seems like a lot of SUGAR/SWEETENERS in this product that is marketed as a healthy choice. Approximately 2 teaspoons of sugar in each bar. Hmmmmmm. Doesn't seem right. does it??? Low fat does not mean that it is healthy or even good for you. Stick with snacks that don't have an ingredient list! :)
